Cocos is best described as a water lovers paradise. There aren't too many places in the world where you can dive in clear waters with pristine coral gardens, fish in the lagoon or for the more adventurous, deep sea fish, snorkel over historical wrecks from WWII, visit remote islands in motorised canoes, island hop in a glass-bottom boat, surf a left-hand break, kite and wind surf.
During the Australian winter, Cocos has steady trade winds which
are perfect for surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing. The sailing is done
mainly in the central lagoon which is several kilometres in diameter
and much of it is only waist deep. The lagoon is exceptional for
beginner and intermediate kite and wind surfers and those keen
on slalom sailing. Even if you don't actively participate in these sports, there is nothing more spectacular than seeing the the bottom end of the lagoon awash with colourful sails and kites. |
